MSI GX640-260 15.4-Inch Gaming Laptop - Black/Red Review
The GX640-260US Laptop PC is truly a beast of a machine. While it has a couple of minor flaws, overall, the performance doesn't disappoint.
Looks: The red is designed to appeal to gamers, and while not overly obnoxious, I think a dark blue trim would have been more fitting with the control panel LEDs being blue. Still, the primary design is solidly built with the nice brushed aluminum enclosure.
Layout: One seeming flaw with this machine is that the left function and control keys are switched, so it takes a little getting used to. Some people claim the single row return key is bothersome, but I don't have an issue with it as that's been the way most of my other laptops have been. The keyboard seems nice and responsive, as does the touchpad which is not multitouch by the way. Again, this doesn't bother me as I've found the multitouch pads to be a little difficult to work with. The ports are well laid out, and let me mention that the eSata port doubles as a USB port, so you effectively have 3 USB ports and not two. This does have a Firewire port as well, but the JMicron chipset is problematic for transferring digital video (something I do a lot of) so this was a disappointment for me. There are workarounds, but it's annoying to have to mess with it.
Screen and Sound: The screen is gorgeous, and I like the larger 16:10 ratio and the higher resolution. The screen IS LED backlit, despite what you might read in other reviews. It's crisp and sharp with good color saturation and ample brightness. While the speakers are good, they aren't quite up to the sound quality of the Harmon Kardon speakers found in the Toshiba Satellite series of laptops (which are the best I've ever heard). You can synthesize 3D surround sound, again with good results, with nice expansion of the speakers from standard stereo. The overall sound lacks a good bass, however.
Performance: Here's where this baby really shines. While an i7 processor would have been ideal, the i5 coupled with the Radeon 5850 makes this unit a screamer for graphic intensive programs and games. The Radeon graphics are top of the line in mobile graphics GPUs and the GDDR5 1GB memory really provides solid benchmark numbers for the overall price of this laptop. Very impressive! I suggest you drop an extra 20 dollars on a laptop cooler, as you can't have that kind of performance without slightly higher temps than a standard laptop.
Flaws and all, I am still extremely pleased with this laptop, and the three year warranty makes this a no-brainer, especially at this price. You simply can't beat it.
